Product Overview

Hello :-)  We keep getting asked if you absolutely need our finishes if you want to maintain an Urthware cutting board. YOU DO NOT need to purchase our finishes to maintain your board!! Many many customers make their own or just oil them with their favourite oil! We make finishes as a service to our customers only. We know shipping is expensive (especially to our USA customers!) so having to buy it from us forever is really expensive. We also know the finishing products are expensive (we have no choice, the ingredients are). We'd much rather you buy the bigger board you do want and not buy finish, than a smaller board with maintenance finish you don't if its down to cost!

You can absolutely use your own trusted high quality oil or oil/wax. If you've been using yours for years and you love it, go for it!  If you want to just oil your board go for it! If you want to make your own high quality finish with wax in it for added protection and less maintenance, absolutely do! (generally the mix is 4 parts oil and one part wax but this varies and this is up to you). We don't recommend paraffin wax or mineral oil as they are petroleum based products and sometimes don't mix well with natural finishes on your board, at the very least until the factory finish wears off first  (you get a patchy look).

You can just use an oil finish, it soaks in deeper than wax would alone, but it wear off super fast if its a non drying oil (yes you could use a wax alone too it'll block water, very hard to apply though), it prevents water soaking up deeply thus helps reduce cracking and warping, oil plus a oil/wax blend (board butter) after is even better, oil goes deep and a wax sits more near or on the surface repelling more water.  The purpose of finishes on a cutting board used for work isn't to look pretty (your board is gonna get beat up if you're using it, it has a hard life) it is to fill the wood fibers or block the wood fibers from getting filled with water mostly but also, blood, food juice staining etc. Oils and waxes are stable, you want them filling or on top of the wood fibers instead of water which quickly soaks in if oil/wax isn't present then evapourates fairly quickly so it expands and contracts your cutting board constantly, and rapidly, causing cracking and warping.

(STEP 2) Our Urthware Premium cutting board wax finish is a superior blend of 100% organic ingredients from Canada and around the world.

100 ml (3.5oz) jar of our blend of Certified Organic MCT Coconut Oil, Certified Organic Blend of Canadian/USA Beeswax & Organic Carnauba wax.

Our source of MCT Coconut oil, (Medium Chain Triglyceride) is made using a USDA certified organic process, where the fats are gently removed from virgin coconut oil that remain solid at room temperature, leaving high levels of capric and caprylic acids. Unlike NON-organic MCT Oils, there are no chemicals or filler oils used during this removal process this results in a pure, clean, natural product that also has a light natural fragrance of coconut.

This premium product is one of the most pure, natural and organic cutting board finishes that can be made. We source the best quality materials and blend them to make a beautiful natural finish.

For deeper hydration and protection, this Urthware Organic WAX finish product should be used in conjunction with our (step 1) Urthware Cutting Board OIL in addition to this product.

We even package in FDA approved glass jars instead of tin or plastic (note:plastic lid is used)

The addition of Pure Certified, 100% Organic, Canadian locally sourced Beeswax, blended with the pure USA 100% Organic beeswax adds a softer deeper penetrating wax for water resistance and protects all the surfaces of your cutting board.

The addition of a harder 100% Organic Carnauba wax (that makes an even more durable surface wax) helps protect your wooden surfaces even to an even greater degree than beeswax alone

Contains NO artificial or petroleum based products, and no fillers ( i.e. Absolutely no mineral oil or paraffin wax)
Zero preservatives, Gluten free, Hexane free and as with all of our products it is absolutely all natural.

This cutting board and butcher block finish (also, known as oil finish or board butter) is completely non-toxic and can be applied to everything made of wood in your home without worrying about anything toxic. Perfect for wooden utensils, knife handles, cutting boards, wooden counter tops (if not already finished in a synthetic finish), wooden high chairs, wooden plates, bamboo cutting boards, bamboo utensils, etc.

special note: If your wooden item has been previously finished in a hard top coat finish (lacquer, varnish, etc) as tables, chairs and countertops normally are. Oil finishes (synthetic or natural) will not penetrate this surface.

If your wooden item is previously finished in a petroleum based oil finish, such as most cutting board/butcher block butters (i.e. "mineral oil" finish) are. Wait until the synthetic/petroleum based finish has worn away (your wooden item looks dry and in need of oil/wax) before attempting to oil/wax with a natural oil.  Test in an inconspicuous spot to make sure the oil/wax soaks in evenly. Oiling a wooden item with a previous synthetic oil or wax finish with a natural oil/wax may not absorb evenly (patchy look). Though it may eventually even out.

We assume no liability for patchy application or any other issue that may occur on non-Urthware products, or any product with previous finishes (including but not limited to synthetic petroleum based finishes) as other finishes may be incompatible with our natural finishes.

Lasts approx. 10-15 board oilings based on a medium sized board (average depends on use and size of board and how dry your board is etc)
